Author, Mother, Fun Lover!

Thanks so much for taking the time to check out my website.

If you want to get to know more about me and Lightbulb Books then feast your eyes on the info below.

My name’s Emma and I’m the author and creator of Lightbulb Books.

So far I’ve self published 5 children’s books and my best friend of 20+ years, Georgina Peters, has illustrated them - and beautifully I might add. Working with her is an actual dream, mainly because she knows me inside out and we’re not scared to tell each other what we think!

We have both been Christians our whole lives and have loved creating books that are vibrant, fun and full of the truth of God’s love and awesome plans.

Fun fact - A Little Town Called Hope, which was our first book, was actually a surprise gift from George. I sent her a long text one night containing a poem I had written in the shower (I know that sounds a bit weird but it’s really the only place I have to think that isn’t filled with children!). A few months later, after feeling God nudge her, she sent me an illustrated version of that poem and springboarded me into author life and we have been jumping in and figuring it out ever since. I am forever grateful for that gift!

The last 3 and a bit years have seen me dive into the world of self publishing which, I am now fully aware, is a lot more than just writing books. You can find me doing a variety of things from hosting book launches, reading and leading activities in schools, visiting churches, speaking at events, selling my books at markets and festivals, leading consultations to help other self publishers and creating my own branding and now website too. It’s been a learning curve but I enjoy every aspect of creating books and it’s been a lot of fun working on the ‘non-writing’ elements of the job too.

A bit about me.

I was raised on Exmoor, in the middle of nowhere on a farm that was owned by my parents’ friends. I lived in an upside down house and spent most of my childhood surrounded by animals. We had tame lambs and calves that we bottle fed every year to get them strong enough to be put out into the fields and we also had pot bellied pigs who enjoyed a tummy tickle - they were called Bill and Ben!

I now live in Bath with my husband Paul and three gorgeous children, Esmé, Alana and Simeon and have no pets whatsoever. I love living in a city, being surrounded by people (finally) and having lots to do but I do miss the countryside and having that amazing connection with animals. I do NOT miss all the poo though!

The best day

2011

I strongly disliked reading when I was little and always favoured watching a film or listening to a cassette, so I do see the irony in me now being an author. I also refused to hold my pen correctly for the first few years at school so writing was interesting! When I was in year 6 my teacher, Mr Smith (if you ever read this, you’re a legend!) would give a chocolate bar to the kid who got the most house points (good marks for work) which was enough to fully engage me and bring out my competitive side. I suddenly showed a huge interest in learning and actually found that I loved it and wanted to do well.

Fast forward a few years to being 18, I went to the University of Exeter to read Theology, came out with a 2:1 and a boyfriend, who I later married, and a real geekish love for essay writing! Fast forward again to the present day, add three kids into the mix and my theological essay writing looks more like funny Christian kids books and constantly being asked to make up weird stories about eyeball soup - and I couldn’t love it more. I love writing books about God and I also enjoy being really silly too!
